iPhone 5 – Product Concept

May 4, 2012 in Product Concepts, Renders

There are many iPhone 5 concepts flying around the web some are so good that they are practically impossible while some offer up only minor changes.

My concept involves some very simple changes, most noticeably the thickness, with Apple products such as the MacBook Air i designed this with a slim body and feel in mind. So I decided to almost half this thickness of the previous (In my eyes bulky) iPhone 4S to create a slim and sleek version.

One main selling point of the iPhone is the retina display, I decided to enlarge this and make use of the full body of the iPhone compared with the previous model of 4S which left quite a bit of the front of the phone just plain plastic, so why not use it? Obviously this calls for a higher resolution screen but this is a concept after all!

Another change was the material, I felt brushed steel gave it a more slick look in comparison to the usual high gloss plastic.

This is just a small project that took me around an hour or so just to have a play in Solidworks.

Final Project – 1st Year – Product Design

So the end of the year is upon us! This project involved creating a cruet set mainly focusing on the aesthetics side. The design aesthetic must be an acceptable aesthetic and this must be justified in the designs narrative!

This project also involved modelling the cruet set and as you can see from the pictures on this post this included development modelling also before the final models were made. 3D Computerised Models were created and rendered in Solidworks x86 2011.

I wanted to design a cruet set which incorperted two of my ideas. One was to incorporate the psychological theory of ‘Scalar Metaphor’ in which the users subconscious makes them feel as though a larger object is more important than a small object. Also I wanted to create forms which showed the user the contents of the cruet vessel just by looking at the characteristics of the shape.

As you can see for the above design the salt, pepper, vinegar and oil go down in size from most important to least important which incorporates the scalar metaphor. Also the form of each represents its contents, the salt is smooth and very sounded to portray the colour of white. The peppers vessel is very angular and casts a lot of shadow giving the impression of the colour black to represent pepper. The two other vessels for vinegar and oil have sweeping curves to show they are fluids, and to distinguish between the two we see vinegar (brown in colour) has sharp chamfered edges while oil (light yellow in colour) has very rounded and smooth curves.

The form of each displays which condiment is in which pot, and the scalar metaphor used goes against traditional oversized vinegar and oil cruet sets as I wanted to create one where the liquids were not as important!

The first year has been great and I’ve learned a LOT I did not know before and I can only hope to keep on learning and improving my skills over the summer break!

Panton Chair – Marker Render / 3D CAD Model

April 14, 2012 in Uncategorized

Here i drew a simple marker rendering of the famous Panton chair designed by Verner Panton in 1967.

I then went on to work in Solidworks to create the chair in 3D, and finally present both forms as one image.

GP Grafix – Website Design

April 10, 2012 in Business Design, Web Design

Here is a website I made for a client for his company GP Grafix. The client has a set idea and wanted me to make what they saw in their mind into a fully functioning website.

Good communication means the clients idea of what they want can be easily transformed into the website they wanted.

Take a look if your interested in personalized items from signs, car stickers all the way to wall art and custom clothing theres bound to be something for you!

Nikon Coolpix 3 – Full 3D Solidworks Render

February 28, 2012 in Renders

This assignment involved modeling an exact replica of a Nikon Coolpix 3 camera from a 2D reference sheet. The back screen of the camera contains images of the key areas of the modeling process and finally the finished and rendered model.

Each part was made individually and was assembled together with every other part in the final stage.

The process of making each part all the way to a full render took a total time of 7 hours.

In this project I had to draw my previously modelled Nikon Coolpix camera from scratch using biro and then marker in the detail to create the final render.

Nikon Coolpix – Model Making Project

February 7, 2012 in Models, Product Concepts

In this project it involved creating a replica of a Nikon Coolpix digital camera.

I crafted resin blocks using tools in the workshop such as the band saw, disc sanders, chisels and craft knives. Smaller more detailed components were rapid prototyped (Buttons & Top strip) and others were made using the laser cutter (Lens, Flash, Screens).

The parts were painted seperately and assembled using epoxy resin for a strong hold.

Lego Car – Solidworks 3D Modelling Render

January 24, 2012 in Renders

Here I have assembled an F1 style car using seperate parts in the 3D Modelling software Solidworks. I assembled each lego part to make the final assembly and created the final colours and render using photoshop 360 to give a realistic glossy look.

I will later be adding graphics and vinyls to the car to resemble the  current Mercedes Mclaren F1 car.
