iPhone 5 – Product Concept
May 4, 2012 in Product Concepts, Renders
There are many iPhone 5 concepts flying around the web some are so good that they are practically impossible while some offer up only minor changes.
My concept involves some very simple changes, most noticeably the thickness, with Apple products such as the MacBook Air i designed this with a slim body and feel in mind. So I decided to almost half this thickness of the previous (In my eyes bulky) iPhone 4S to create a slim and sleek version.
One main selling point of the iPhone is the retina display, I decided to enlarge this and make use of the full body of the iPhone compared with the previous model of 4S which left quite a bit of the front of the phone just plain plastic, so why not use it? Obviously this calls for a higher resolution screen but this is a concept after all!
Another change was the material, I felt brushed steel gave it a more slick look in comparison to the usual high gloss plastic.
This is just a small project that took me around an hour or so just to have a play in Solidworks.

Nice design, it looks quite a bit like the leaked pictures of the supposed next generation iPhone.
One thing – though – the front of the 4S is all glass with a vinyl on the inward-facing side to give it the white/black around the screen; it is certainly not plastic.
Again, the rear of the phone is not plastic, the glass and vinyl do nothing to hinder signals from passing through, whereas a steel back-plate would block cellular and wi-fi signals.
Have to say I laughed a little when you wrote “in my eye’s bulky [iPhone 4S]” about what was the world’s thinnest smartphone just 24 months ago.
Yeah I know the previous 4S was glass which in my opinion sucked! Check out the drop test of Samsung Galaxy S2 vs iPhone 4S its shocking how fragile that is! I suppose not a problem if you’re careful! Thats why I would opt for some tough scratch proof plastic for screen / back which is obviously shatter resistant!
Yeah the steel would most probably hinder signal but it is a concept after all!
And yes it was the thinnest! But not anymore with some really powerful phones such as the S2 again being thinner and just as good spec wise!
Anyway was just a little concept more of a solidworks project than an actual product concept I actually am intrigued to see what the 5 will look like!
I’ve seen the video and it’s not changed my opinion in any way, especially considering I have insurance – couldn’t care less. I’m sure apple will have a few things to share regarding innovation in the smartphone industry, and trust me Apple create, Samsung copy. I pay for design, what do galaxy users pay for?
Hey if you can afford insurance then theres nothing to worry about! Your right Apple do create some good stuff and are always at the top with regards to technology. Galaxy users pay less for a phone of the same or above spec. This is not an Apple bashing so I wont get into that!
